Describe how intelligence is measured, and discuss the controversies regarding these measurements

What will be an ideal response?

Intelligence is controversial because it can be viewed as something you "either have or do not have" or as
something that "varies depending on culture.". Views about measuring intelligence have changed as our
thoughts about "what is intelligence?" have changed. Original thinking about intelligence considered it to be
something that one either had or did not have. More recent thoughts (such as Gardner and Sternberg) consider
intelligence to be multi-faceted and to involve more than just "book smarts" as measured by traditional IQ tests.
Controversy still remains over the issue of IQ versus intelligence. In other words, how much of intelligence is
represented by IQ and how much cannot be measured? Also, intelligence tests have, through time, been found
to be biased against certain groups of individuals. "Culture-free" or culture-fair tests have not provided a
definitive solution to this issue.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: VOYG.RATH.17.12.4 - Discuss how intelligence is measured with consideration of factors such as cultural
bias, age, and nature/nurture determinants.
