Your friend is bilingual and she is not sure whether to encourage bilingualism with her newborn. Even if she does, she is not sure what type of bilingualism to utilize
What can you tell her about the various types of
bilingualism and the advantages and disadvantages to being bilingual?
What will be an ideal response?
Students' answers should mention the difference between sequential (first learn one language and then the other)
and simultaneous (learn both languages at the same time) bilingualism. Whether the family encourages in additive
(learn a second language while maintaining the first) or subtractive (learn the new language while "losing" the old
one) bilingualism will depend on whether the family and the community view both languages positively or if one
language is preferred. Some disadvantages to bilingualism include possible punishment or disapproval for using a
language, code mixing, and taking slightly longer to acquire language. Advantages include higher scores on things
such as concept formation, cognitive flexibility, metalinguistic awareness, ability to correct ungrammatical
sentences, verbal and nonverbal creativity, and analogical thinking.
