The cerebrum—the seat of complex thought—is divided into two separate hemispheres. Recent decades have seen an exciting flurry of research on the specialized abilities of the right and left cerebral hemispheres. Some theorists have gone so far as to suggest that people really have two brains in one! Hints of this hemispheric specialization have been available for many years, from cases in which one side of a person’s brain has been damaged. The left hemisphere was implicated in the control of language as early as 1861, by Paul Broca, a French surgeon. Broca was treating a patient who ha been unable to speak for 30 years. After the patient died, Broca showed that the probable cause of his speech deficit was a small lesion on the left side of the frontal lobe. Since then, many similar cases have shown that this area of the brain—known as Broca’s area—plays an important role in the production of speech.
