Given the large number of tandem rDNA genes, how is the sequence of each copy prevented from accumulating mutations and becoming nonfunctional?
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: One model suggests that one copy is directly paired with a different copy by exchanging single strands and that one is used to repair the other. This model is called gene conversion. A second model suggests that by successive rounds of unequal crossing-over between mispaired copies, a particular copy becomes fixed in the cluster and is represented at many different positions in the cluster. This model is called crossover fixation.
