What is meant by the term "protein sparing"? Why is this concept important to understand?
What will be an ideal response?
"Protein sparing" refers to the fact that carbohydrates (and fat) in our diet serve as the main source of energy, allowing protein to be used for other important body functions. In cases where there is not enough energy from the diet in the form of carbohydrate or fat, protein must instead be converted to glucose and used for energy, at the expense of other body functions such as tissue synthesis. It is important to understand this as the rationale for the importance of eating foods from all three macronutrient groups. Eliminating carbohydrates from the diet could result in insufficient glucose intake.
