A traffic signal control is being designed for a four-leg intersection on a divided highway with the characteristics shown in the table below. Determine an appropriate length of the yellow interval for each approach and how you will provide it.

Assume the average vehicle length L is 20 ft, and the perception-reaction time ? is

1.0 sec. Use the AASHTO recommended deceleration rate a of 11.2 ft/sec2. Use

Equation 8.5.

For N-S approach,

W = 3 x 12 x 2 + 16 = 88 ft,

uo = 50 mph,

G = 0.

A yellow interval of 6 seconds will be provided for the N-S approach.

For E-W approach,

W = 2 x 12 x 2 + 12 = 60 ft,

uo = 40 mph,

G = 0.03.

A yellow interval of 5 seconds will be provided for the E-W approach.
