What are some common reactions and observations about American schools from immigrant families?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: American children are seen as disrespectful and unruly. Students do not sit quietly and obey teachers. Lack of deference and respect toward elders. In fact, in Mandarin the word for teacher—Laoshi—translates roughly to “old teacher or prophet.” Teachers command great respect, although low pay, in China. Parents may not be used to being asked to be so involved in their children’s education. School days seem to be much shorter and the school year not long enough. Many students (and parents) from monocultural societies experience prejudice and discrimination because of race or religion, for the first time. Students may not be used to the Socratic method of teaching and may be puzzled by the critical thinking and debate approach of the American style of education.
