A computer programmer and his wife who are both recent immigrants from India bring their 22 month old daughter to the hospital emergency room. During the examination the father seems reluctant to allow the nurse to full undress the child. As the nurse removes the child's clothes, he tells her that the child has been scratching herself. The nurse is horrified to see that the girl's genitals have been mutilated, as if someone has attempted surgery with primitive instruments. When the social worker interviews the parents, she learns that they believe they are simply following an age old cultural tradition. The social worker should

A. respect the parent's tradition, making allowances for the fact that they are recent immigrants.
B. call the police and the child protective agency.
C. seek to educate the parents to American traditions and laws.
D. encourage the parents to accept the best medical treatment available for the child.

B. call the police and the child protective agency.

The parents have violated American law by attempting to perform a clitorectomy and may well be prosecuted. Clitorectomies, though traditional in many cultures are considered mutilations in the US. In a similar case in Boston, Mass. both parents were sentenced two years imprisonment and the child was removed from the family permanently.
