Describe the inflammatory response, including in your explanation why we often see pus at the site of an infection
What will be an ideal response?
When tissues are damaged, they release chemicals called histamines. Histamines increase blood flow to the site of injury and also cause local capillaries to leak fluid. This fluid causes swelling, which helps to isolate the injury from other body tissues. Increased blood flow causes redness. Histamines also attract innate immune cells to the site of injury. Innate immune cells squeeze out of the capillaries, migrate to the site of the wound, and attack any microorganisms that have entered the body. Sometimes, the battle between innate immune cells and pathogens produces a whitish substance called pus. Pus is made up of dead bacteria, dead tissue, and dead and living innate immune cells.
