Responses will vary; At the beginning of the 20th century infectious diseases such as influenza and tuberculosis were the main causes of death. Today, the main causes of death are chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Scientific advances are responsible for the shift in that they have prevented the infectious diseases through sanitation and vaccines. However, these same scientific advances brought about the age of convenience which is characterized by a sedentary lifestyle, greater alcohol consumption, and diets full of fat and sugar.
