Discuss stamping layers as an alternative to merging layers.

What will be an ideal response?

When you stamp layers instead of merging them, Photoshop keeps the original layers intact and creates a new composite layer, called a stamp, with all of the selected or visible layers merged. To stamp selected layers, press the Ctrl+Alt+E keys. If you select a layer that is linked to other layers, pressing the Ctrl+Alt+E keys stamps the linked layers. You can also stamp visible layers by pressing Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E. You can use the stamp to sharpen or adjust the stamped part of the image as one layer, or you can copy the stamp to a different file so you have both a layered and a flattened version of the same file. Because you have merged the layers, the flattened version will have a smaller file size.
