Denotative meanings are the “dictionary” definitions of a word. The denotative definition for the word sick might be “to be physically unwell (i.e., a virus) or mentally ill.” Connotative meanings are informal meanings based on our personal experiences. For example, the connotative definition of sick might be a compliment to an artist’s work or to say something is “awesome.”
