Briefly discuss the three major types of hearing loss, and what may cause each
What will be an ideal response?
Conductive hearing loss prevents sound waves from reaching the inner ear. It may be caused by a foreign body or infection in the external auditory canal, perforation of the tympanic membrane, fluid behind the tympanic membrane, or degeneration of the ossicles of the middle ear. Sensorineural hearing loss prevents generation of nerve impulses to the vestibulocochlear nerve and may be caused by otosclerosis, disease of the cochlea, damage to the inner ear from excessive noise, or aging. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss.
