Feedback: (1) In 1939, as World War II began in Europe, President Roosevelt put the FBI in charge of investigating subversive activities, espionage, and sabotage, and he directed all law enforcement offices to give the FBI any relevant information on suspected activities. This began a pattern followed by the FBI under all subsequent presidents, primarily with the intent of squelching political protest and resulting in many abuses. (2) President Ford responded to those abuses by placing greater controls over the FBI and other government agencies. (3) After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the Patriot Act was passed, giving the FBI and similar agencies the right to spy on speech, behavior, and ideas of citizens and noncitizens, regardless of evidence of a crime or probable cause. Proponents of those social control activities argue that the dangers are serious, and that they are needed to secure the nation by making it easier to identify, prevent, and punish terrorists. Critics, on the other hand, argue that those measures go too far in expanding the government's abilities to intrude on citizens' lives, thereby weakening individual rights.
