How has the fear of crime influenced criminal policies? Provide an example.

What will be an ideal response?

People, the media, or groups may focus on a particular crime and bring that to the
fore. The public may become outraged and push their state or federal leaders to enact
laws based on fear (not research). Sex offender registries (Megan’s law) are a good
example. The research indicates that registries do not help reduce sex offenses, aid in
investigation, or reduce the fear within the society.
