Briefly summarize the early years of African American Lawyers.

What will be an ideal response?

here is a history of excluding minority lawyers from the legal profession. Richard Abel writes that minority groups were “virtually excluded from the profession until the 1960s.” The first African American male lawyers were admitted to practice in the mid-1840s in Massachusetts; the first female African American lawyer was admitted to practice in the District of Columbia in 1872 after graduating from Howard University. These lawyers were the exception; very few African Americans managed to be admitted to the practice of law. In 1900, there were 730 African American lawyers in the United States (or 0.5% of the profession); a decade later there were only 795 African American attorneys. At the turn of the century, roughly 50% of the states had fewer than 10 African American lawyers.
