Many historians believe that the election of 1912 revealed a desire by voters for a continuance of moderate reforms. What evidence supports this thesis? Did voters get what they wanted?

What will be an ideal response?

1. One piece of evidence which supports this thesis was that all four candidates for president who got more than 5 percent of the vote were reformers –Wilson, Roosevelt, Taft, and Debs.
2. Many in the Congress after 1912 supported reform.
3. The people got reforms in several areas, such as banking and the tariff.
4. Reform also occurred in the area of the income tax, which was progressive (though low by later standards; the top rate was 7 percent).
5. They did not get reform in others areas, like child labor – child labor laws were passed and then struck down.
