Explain Kimmel’s argument that men might not actually feel very powerful. Explain hegemonic masculinity and emasculation in addressing which men might not feel powerful. What is the relationship between violence and emasculation?

What will be an ideal response?

Young, white, middle-class, heterosexual men represent the ideal masculine standard or
hegemonic masculinity. Men of color, working-class, and homosexual men cannot ever attain the
ideal status; they do not have equal access to the power of masculinity because of the disadvantaged
statuses they occupy. Men who are not the hegemonic ideal may feel powerless. Kimmel argues that
men spend their lives trying to avoid any forms of emasculation, or reduction in masculinity, and may
turn to violence as a marker of manhood.
