What will be an ideal response?
Children want to cooperate for adults who seem to like them and respect them. Caregivers who are attuned to the emotional needs of the child promote healthier attachment, which in turn facilitates self-regulation, empathy and autonomy in the child. Families are partners in promoting children's development in all domains. Families are excellent resources for information about the child's health and environmental history, their culture, expectations and behavior at home, and family dynamics, all factors that can influence the child's behavior and development. Families can also support your efforts to address challenging behavior. Strategies should include having rich conversations with the child, engaging in play with the child, providing support when the child is upset, sharing your own stories with the child, modeling emotional vocabulary, and demonstrating respect for the child. Strategies with the family include sharing the child's positive experiences with the family, inviting conversation when possible, asking questions about expectations and culture with respect and without judgment, and inviting them to participate in program activities.
