How are rings formed in a woody stem and what do they tell about the plant?

What will be an ideal response?

Rings are formed around the stem by the xylem. The xylem carries water and nutrients up into the plant from the roots. Each year a new ring is added and the old ring dies. This ring is called the annual ring and is used in determining the age of the plant or tree.
