Answer: In the 1860s and 1870s farmers organized the Grange, and with some success brought pressure on state legislatures to regulate the practices of the railroads and grain elevator companies. With the decline of the Grange in the 1880s, the Southern Farmers' Alliance attempted to organize farmers to confront their problems through political action and cooperatives. By the 1890s, some farm groups came to believe it was necessary to form a third political party to try to achieve the political agenda of the farmers.
