Explain the social work perspective on social functioning. How does the social work perspective view abnormality? What are the strengths of the social work perspective on social functioning? Are there any limitations to this perspective (why or why not)?
What will be an ideal response?
Social workers tend not to classify individuals as abnormal. Instead, they consider the person-in-environment as an ongoing process that facilitates or blocks one's ability to experience satisfactory social functioning. In fact, in social work, the term normalization refers to helping clients realize that their thoughts and feelings are shared by many other individuals in similar circumstances. Social work's person-in-environment (PIE) classification system formally organizes the assessment of individuals' ability to cope with stress around four factors: social functioning problems, environmental problems, mental health problems, and physical health problems. The PIE system avoids labeling a client as abnormal. At the same time, however, it offers no way to assess the client's strengths and resources.
