The first two digits together indicate the series within the basic alloy group. There may be several series within a basic alloy group, depending upon the amount of the principle alloying elements. The last two or three digits refer to the approximate permissible range of carbon content. For example, the metal identified as 1020 would be 1XXX carbon steel with a XX20 0.20% range of carbon content, and 5130 would be 5XXX chromium steel with an XX30 0.30% range of carbon content.
