According to Nagy and Scott (2000) in the Handbook for Reading Research, five factors that illustrate the complexity of word knowledge are incrementality, polysemy, multidimensionality, interrelatedness, and heterogeneity. Incrementality is the idea that word learning takes place in many steps, with the latter stages being infused with greater contextualized meaning. Polysemy is the idea the words have more than one meaning, and the more frequently a word occurs in a language, the more meanings it is likely to have. Multidimensionality emphasizes that knowledge of a word's various dimensions includes both connotative meanings (emotional and imaginative associations with a word) and denotative meanings (the dictionary meaning of a word). Interrelatedness highlights that we cannot fully understand certain words without understanding other words they are dependent on for meaning.
