For over a decade, beta-carotene pills have been promoted as a way to prevent cancer. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), several U.S. studies have found that the pills don't have any cancer-fighting properties. A Physician's Health Study carried out in 1994, for instance, indicated that there was no noteworthy decline in the rate of cancer for people taking high doses of
beta-carotene supplements. In addition, two later studies suggest that taking high doses of beta-carotene pills in combination with smoking may actually increase the risk of lung cancer. And yet another study published by WHO points to an increase in heart disease for smokers who take beta-carotene pills.
