Argots are an important aspect of group identity. Further, in addition to developing an identity, a subgroup’s argot defines the boundaries of the subgroup. Because its argot can change rapidly, to be a member of the subgroup, you have to know the vocabulary. If you don’t know the vocabulary, you’re obviously not a member.
