Explain the effects of alcohol on behavior.
What will be an ideal response?
The effects of alcohol (or any other drug) on behavior is a function of the interactions of the pharmacological properties of the substance, the individual’s physiology and personality, and the social and cultural context in which the substance is ingested. Pharmacologically, alcohol is a depressant drug that inhibits the functioning of the higher brain centers. As more and more alcohol is drunk, behavior becomes less and less inhibited as the rational cortex surrenders its control of the drinker’s demeanor to the more primitive emotional limbic system. Alcohol also reduces inhibition by affecting a neurotransmitter called gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), which is a major inhibitor of internal stimuli such as fear, anxiety, and stress.
