Mr. and Mrs. Hussain are searching for a preschool for their child. Compare and contrast three model programs described in Chapter 4 on the dimensions of child-centeredness, role of the teacher, classroom arrangement and environment, and the theoretical basis for curriculum to help them make their decision

What will be an ideal response?

All three programs are developmentally appropriate and child-centered. High/Scope is based on Piaget's cognitive development theory, uses interest centers and plan-do-review process in the classroom, and regards teachers as an observers and facilitators for active learning. The Montessori teacher guides the children as they work at their own pace, observing and encouraging learning and preparing the classroom environment which is highly organized with practical life, sensory, and academic materials. Reggio Emilia is based on a constructivist model centered on relationships, employing emergent curriculum and projects. The teachers are partners with children and parents in continual learning in an aesthetically pleasing environment.
