The emptying of the bladder is a combination of voluntary and involuntary actions and is called the micturition reflex. The bladder fills with urine; stretch receptors send afferent signals into the CNS and stimulate parasympathetic activity directed at the bladder wall and inhibit motor neurons supplying the external sphincter, allowing it to relax. Parasympathetic system causes the bladder to contract, and urine can be excreted past the relaxed external sphincter. Voluntary signals can override the reflex so that urination can occur at the appropriate time.
