Briefly describe the types of subirrigation systems that would be appropriate for interiorscapes
What will be an ideal response?
There are three subirrigation systems that would be appropriate for interiorscapes. One type of
subirrigation system uses a series of hefty, hard plastic casing that acts as underground reservoirs.
Capillary action from these underground reservoirs allows for slow uptake of moisture through the
root environment. Another type of system uses a vacuum effect to keep plants watered over weeks or
months. Instead of a series of connected pipe reservoirs, this system uses a one-piece container that has
a water reservoir within its walls and base, a pot within a pot. A third type of system uses a similar
method of capillary action of reservoir water to soil, but facilitates movement with fine lava rock and
other coarse particulate material.

When the truss in Figure P8.8 is loaded, the support at E displaces 0.6 in. vertically downward and the support at A moves 0.4 in. to the right. Compute the horizontal and vertical components of displacement of joint C. For all bars the area = 2 in. 2 , and E = 29,000 kips/in. 2
