Describe Jeremy Bentham's panopticon. What are its advantages and disadvantages?

What will be an ideal response?

Panopticon means "all-seeing." It was a wheel-like structure with a central tower, through which guards could look into every inmate's cell. The tower's design shielded the guards, so the inmates would never be able to tell when a guard was watching. Bentham believed the panopticon would be cost-effective. Another advantage is that prisoners would be less likely to get into trouble because they would not know when a guard was observing them. The disadvantage of the panopticon is that it would have to be designed and built from the ground up instead of using an existing building. That makes a panopticon an expensive choice. The authors mention that some people consider the panopticon "diabolical," perhaps because it could make inmates paranoid
