Autocratic leadership involves the supervisor making all the decisions. The supervisor determines what is to be done, how it is to be done, when it is to be done, and who is going to do it. Managers using this style delegate very little authority. If an individual doesn’t know how to do the job, lacks certain skills, or is unsure about how to approach the job, this style might be appropriate. This style would also be appropriate in the cases involving urgency.
Most of us want our leaders to be democratic leaders. This type of supervisor consults with subordinates before making job decisions. This style would be appropriate if the subordinates know their jobs fairly well. The laissez-faire style involves the manager delegating power and authority to the subordinates to perform the task at hand. The manager is more of a coach or a consultant who provides guidance. This approach would probably be appropriate if the subordinates are very skilled and experienced in the their jobs, and when the manager is handling more than one job or project at a time.
