Title—the subject and other relevant information about the map.
North arrow—map directionality, relative to north.
Symbols—lines, patterns, areas, icons etc to represent features on the map.
Legend—defines the meaning of the symbols used in the map.
Map scale—mathematical relationship between size of map to size of real world the map represents. The three types of scales that may be present are representational fraction, graphic scale, and written scale.
Map projection—the mathematical model used to transform the spherical Earth to a 2D surface.
