What are Likert-type responses? How are they useful?

Likert-type responses generally ask respondents to indicate the extent to which they agree or disagree with statements. This format is generally believed to have been developed by Rensis Likert in the 1930s. Likert-type response categories list choices for respondents to select their level of agreement with a statement and may look something like this:
I think “three strikes” laws that increase penalties for individuals convicted of three or more felonies will help to decrease the crime rate.
