How did women's roles change with the advent of Soviet society?
What will be an ideal response?
Because the platform of the Communist Party advocated equality within society, even if that meant only economic equality, more opportunities were available for women to obtain an education, a place in the workforce, and changes in social and family life. There was the expectation that all citizens in Soviet society would work to further the cause of the new order, including women. This was made easier by state-sponsored measures like childcare. Changes to family life included the transition to civil rather than religious marriages, and greater availability of divorce, which was seen as offering an escape and protection to women in situations of domestic abuse. Women obtained greater control over reproduction for a short period because abortions were legalized (but this policy was renounced when fears of depopulation surfaced). These measures helped women become more economically self-sufficient and can thus be viewed as progressive reforms.
