Explain why sparing glycogen levels is critical during exercise and give examples of how this is accomplished
There is a close relationship between depletion of muscle glycogen stores and time to exhaustion during moderate exercise. Maintaining a high-carbohydrate diet that promotes glycogen stores increases the capacity to perform prolonged exercise. Glycogen is spared by converting carbon from lactate, amino acids, and glycerol into glucose through gluconeogenesis during exercise and with carbohydrate-loading prior to the event.
