However, an incidental approach might not include some words that would be highly useful for struggling readers to know. Typically lagging in vocabulary development, struggling readers might need a systematic program.
• In a systematic approach, words are selected for study and are taught on a regular basis. The main advantage of the systematic approach is that vocabulary study is given more emphasis and more words will be introduced. Highly useful words can be selected for introduction. However, the words studied might not be related to the texts that students are reading or writing.
