What is immunological tolerance?
What will be an ideal response?
Immunological tolerance is the mechanism that operates to ensure that lymphocytes do not contain antigen receptors specific for host components. This is achieved through a process involving the removal of self-reactive T and B cells called negative selection. Both T and B cells are removed by apoptosis after the engagement of T-cell receptors and immunoglobulins, respectively, if the interaction with their ligands is especially strong. The consequence is the removal of autoreactive lymphocytes that could cause damage to healthy, uninfected cells and tissues.
