Analyze the relationship between creatinine and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and
prediction of kidney function.
What will be an ideal response?
Creatinine is constantly released by muscle cells. The glomerulus in the intact nephron will clear
creatinine from the body as it is produced, keeping the level constant. If the GFR decreases, the
serum creatinine level will increase. Therefore, creatinine concentration or creatinine clearance can
be used to indicate change in glomerular function. An equation using serum creatinine to estimate
GFR and a spot urine albumin–urine creatinine ratio have replaced the 24-hour urine specimen
collection.
