The goodwill speechis part information and part persuasion. It informs the audience about a product, company, profession, institution, or person. But beneath the surface, it persuades by promoting an image – by creating a positive attitude and good feeling toward this person or thing. Two special types are: 1) the speech of self-justification – the speaker attempts to rationalize or justify his or her actions; and 2) the speech of apology – the speaker apologizes for some transgression and tries to restore his or her credibility.
