What role did overseas competition play in fueling conflict between the European states?

What will be an ideal response?

The first European countries to establish successful overseas trade and colonies were Spain and Portugal. As a result, France, England, and the Netherlands were behind in acquiring territories and the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) had, in theory, divided the world's dominion between Spain and Portugal. As a result, there was considerable competition from other European states, who would engage in piracy and warfare to conquer territories of the Spanish and Portuguese. The Dutch, however, largely avoided the same tactics in colonizing, preferring instead to establish trading outposts and a monopoly on certain products.
