Compare and contrast a traditional generalization approach with a pattern (Word Building) approach to teaching syllabic analysis.
What will be an ideal response?
• In a pattern approach, words that fit the pattern are introduced and students are led to see the pattern in each of the words. If possible, the pattern is related to a single-syllable word: no, noble, hotel, motel. Students learn that syllables that end in a vowel are generally long.
• In a generalization or rules approach, students are provided with the generalization: "Syllables that end in a vowel are generally long" and are then shown examples of the generalization.
• A pattern approach emphasizes the ability to spot the pattern in a multisyllabic word. In a generalization approach, emphasis is on applying the generalization: analyzing syllables in words and deciding which generalizations they follow.
