To minimize risk to a person's safety and well-being, the following are suggested guidelines to internet dating (Starling, 2000):
1. Practice common sense: Don't give out personal information such as phone numbers, email addresses, or home addresses. Be careful about sharing too much personal information too soon. If the individuals do decide to meet, meet in a public place.
2. Pay attention: Liars, exploiters, gold-diggers, and playboys abound on the internet.
3. Research: Before getting too involved in an on-line relationship or before agreeing to meet face to face, research phone numbers, places of work, and email addresses to make sure the person is who he or she says. Ask for references and check them.
4. Know what you want: Before getting too involved in an internet relationship, make sure you know your intentions. Do you want a casual fling or a long -term friend? Do you desire to pursue a committed relationship or a brief sexual encounter? Make sure your intentions are made clear to your internet dating partner.
