Describe the process of RFLP

RFLP is one of the original techniques used in forensic DNA analysis. It is costly, very time-consuming, and requires a substantial sample of DNA. RFLP consists of the following steps: A.) Extract and purify the DNA sample. B.) An enzyme, called a restriction polymerase, is used to cut the DNA into pieces. These pieces are a variety of sizes. C.) Gel electrophoresis uses an electrical charge to separate the fragments based upon size, electrical charge and other physical properties—the molecules are forced across the gel by the electric charge. D.) The fragments are then hybridized with DNA probes that bind to particular areas of a sample which allow for analysis.
