Name and describe the two pharmacological strategies for treating Alzheimer’s disease that were described in the book.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: By inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors raise acetylcholine levels, counteracting diminished acetylcholine levels from the loss of cholinergic neurons. Another pharmacological strategy addresses excitotoxic destruction of neurons. Excitotoxicity derives from overstimulation of glutamate NMDA receptors. Given this, researchers have studied drugs that prevent NMDA receptor activation as treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.
