Explain why motorcycles have charging systems and describe how a basic charging system works. Your answer should address rectification and voltage regulation.

What will be an ideal response?

The purpose of a charging system is to replenish the current in a battery as it is used when the motorcycle is operating. The alternator provides AC current but a battery requires direct current. In order to convert AC to DC a rectifier is used. Since the voltage from the charging system must be maintained within a predetermined range, a voltage regulator controls the output of the charging system.

Answer the following statement(s) true (T) or false (F)

1. A bimodal inverter is an inverter type that can operate as either a grid-tie or stand-alone inverter. 2. A converter is a device that converts direct current (DC) electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity. 3. Stand-alone inverters are connected to the batteries in a stand-alone PV system. 4. A true sine wave inverter is suitable for sensitive electronic equipment because it produces an output with very little distortion. 5. Inverter efficiency has improved over the years and now many grid-tie inverters are rated up to 95% efficient.
