Discuss how human relations theory contributed to a new set of misunderstandings in the workplace
What will be an ideal response?
The good intentions of the theory led to a whole host of misunderstandings. In
particular, misunderstandings arose when workers were told they were important but
were not treated as such. This contradiction led to suspicion on the part of the workers
and unwillingness to trust management. Misunderstandings also occurred because
managers lacked the communication skills necessary to interact with workers on a
humane level. Managers knew how to communicate using fear, orders, threats, and oneway
communication but were seemingly lost when they were supposed to show concern
for their workers, solicit their input, and engage them personally.
