Using the information presented in your textbook, present the two sides to the debate regarding the use of animals in research. Provide at least one argument supporting each side.
What will be an ideal response?
The side arguing against animal research is correct in stating that animals are not able to give consent to be involved in research. This side also argues that animal use in research can only be supported through a view of species in which the burden to animals but not people is acceptable. On the other side, scientists argue that the lack of control over humans' lives makes research with them difficult to address many research questions. Supporting this side is the fact that modern medical treatments and understanding of diseases and disorders would not have been possible without past animal research. Understanding of the brain has also relied on past animal research, as seen in the Nobel Prize-winning work of Carlson, Greengard, and Kandel.
