Explain and give examples of the processes of autonomy-supportive parenting and gatekeeping.

What will be an ideal response?

The ideal answer should include:
1. Autonomy-supportive parenting supports the child's need for age-appropriate independence, competence, and social relatedness. This type of parenting considers the child's perspective, provides meaningful alternative choices, and shares with the child the reasoning behind rules.
2. For example, the parent sets a general rule that homework must be completed before bedtime, and the child makes a plan for the day that includes homework plus other things the child wants to do. If the child challenges the parent's rule, the parent will explain the logic behind the rule.
3. Gatekeeping refers to parents indirectly controlling their children's access to peers and other adults by exercising choices of neighborhood, school, church, or after-school activities.
4. For example, a child wants to learn to play the piano. The parent makes it possible, financially and in terms of transportation and other support, for the child to get piano lessons. Thus, the parent acts as a gatekeeper for the child's opportunity by providing access to the activity.
