Describe the authority that the Supreme Court has, and how the Court has come by this authority

What will be an ideal response?

The Supreme Court has appellate jurisdiction over lower state and federal courts on issues that involve either interpretation of federal law or the applicability of the Constitution to the subject at hand, and over cases dealing with treaties the U.S. has entered into, admiralty and maritime cases, or cases involving certain public officials and political entities. It has original jurisdiction in cases dealing with foreign dignitaries or cases involving legal disputes between states. Its authority is established in Article 3 of the U.S. Constitution. Additionally, the Court has the power of judicial review, as set forth in its decision of Marbury v. Madison, and the power to review state court cases, as established in Martin v. Hunter's Lessee.
